Giving Thanks, Batya Metalitz

In preparation for my Thanksgiving day workshop at Capitol Hill Yoga, I am dedicating a post a day this November to honoring my many teachers on this yoga journey.

After Kate Miller moved to California, I wondered what I would do next!  I had found this great teacher, and now she was leaving.  Thankfully, Willow Street wisely transitioned her class to a talented replacement, Batya Metalitz, who had recently moved back to the DC area.  Batya stepped into big shoes and held her own, with grace and wisdom.  She brought a beautiful understanding of yoga, a lovely smile, and a supportive presence to our class.  Some students left, which is always the case in teacher transitions, but I loved what Batya offered.  I learned a great deal from Batya in the year or so that I studied with her.  In Batya’s class, I did my first astavakrasana, played with handstand, and challenged myself to go deeper and explore new poses.

I am thankful to Batya for always exhibiting a quiet confidence and great sense of humor.  For teaching me about Action vs. Form in such a skillful way that I now share it with my students.  For weaving incredible themes from something fascinating she read in the New York Times Science section.  For creating a safe space for me to explore, and for sweetly supporting me on my path.

Thank you, Batya!
